SKIING CONTRIBUTOR HANS SAARI
DIES IN ACCIDENT
CHAMONIX, France
(AP) -- Hans Saari, an extreme skier and writer who traveled
internationally to pursue his sport, died of head injuries
suffered in a skiing accident in the French Alps. He was 30.
A family member said that Saari was skiing on Tuesday, May
8 in the Chamonix region of France while on assignment for a
ski magazine. He was skiing with friends down a deep gorge and
hit a patch of ice, lost control and fell about 2000 feet,
said the relative, who asked not to be identified.
A skier below the gorge saw him fall, and alerted rescuers,
and a helicopter was on the scene within 10 minutes, a witness
said.
Saari was evacuated to a local hospital in Chamonix and
later taken to a larger hospital in Geneva, Switzerland, where
he died.
The Bozeman, Mont. native was a 1993 graduate of Yale.
After college he honed his skiing talent, and added ice
climbing to his repertoire.
Saari was a regular contributor to SKIING Magazine and has
written an article on skiing in his home state of Montana
which is scheduled for release this fall.
